50 Bible Journaling Ideas for Every Season of Life

Sometimes you sit down to journal and stare at a blank page. You know you want to engage with Scripture, but you're not sure where to start or what to write. These 50 ideas will give you a launching pad for every season — whether you're walking through grief, celebrating answered prayer, wrestling with doubt, or simply want to go deeper in your daily reading.

For the Seasons of Grief and Hardship

  1. Write out Psalm 34:18 and journal how God has felt near or distant in your pain.
  2. Read Lamentations 3:19–26 and write an honest letter to God about your current suffering.
  3. Journal through the "Why?" questions you're afraid to ask God.
  4. Write about a time God brought you through a previous hard season. What did you learn?
  5. Read Job 1–2 and write what stands out to you about Job's response to loss.
  6. Meditate on Romans 8:18 and journal what you hope to see on the other side of this trial.
  7. Write a lament psalm in your own words — model it after Psalm 22.

For Seasons of Joy and Celebration

  1. Write out 10 specific things God has done for you in the last 30 days.
  2. Journal through Psalm 100 — what does it mean to "enter his gates with thanksgiving"?
  3. Write a personal psalm of praise for something God recently did.
  4. Record an answered prayer in detail — the request, the waiting, the answer.
  5. Read Philippians 4:4–7 and write about what true joy looks like in your life right now.
  6. Write a letter to someone who will read your journal after you're gone, telling them what God has meant to you.
  7. List 20 things you love about God's character, with one verse supporting each.

For Seasons of Doubt and Wrestling

  1. Write your honest doubts — then read Mark 9:24 and journal your response.
  2. Study Thomas in John 20:24–29. Write about where you see yourself in the story.
  3. Journal what you wish God would explain to you.
  4. Read Habakkuk 1 — write your own complaint to God about something you don't understand.
  5. Write about a belief you hold that has been tested. How has it changed? Strengthened?
  6. Meditate on Proverbs 3:5–6. What would it actually look like to trust God in your specific situation?
  7. Read Psalm 88 — the darkest psalm. Write a response from your own experience.

For Growing in Prayer

  1. Journal through the Lord's Prayer line by line — what does each phrase mean for your life today?
  2. Write a prayer list with Scripture for each request.
  3. Record a conversation with God — write your thoughts, then write what you sense God's response might be from Scripture.
  4. Study the prayers of Paul in Ephesians 1:15–23 and 3:14–21. Pray them for someone specific.
  5. Write about what hinders your prayer life. Then find a verse that speaks to each hindrance.
  6. Journal through Psalm 51 — write a prayer of honest confession and renewal.
  7. List five people who need prayer. Write a specific, Scripture-based prayer for each one.

For Knowing God More

  1. Choose one name of God (El Shaddai, Jehovah Jireh, etc.) and study it. Write what it means for your life.
  2. Read John 1:1–18 and journal what it means that Jesus is "the Word made flesh."
  3. Study a fruit of the Spirit from Galatians 5:22–23. Journal how it is (or isn't) evident in your life.
  4. Write about a character quality of God that you've witnessed this week.
  5. Read Psalm 139 and journal about what it means to be fully known by God.
  6. Study one "I am" statement of Jesus (e.g., "I am the vine" — John 15). Write what it means to you.
  7. Journal about a time you felt God's presence clearly. What was happening? What did it feel like?

For Applying Scripture to Real Life

  1. Read James 1:19–27. Write one specific action step you can take this week.
  2. Journal about a relationship that's difficult. Find three verses that speak into it.
  3. Write about a decision you're facing. List the options, then search for Scripture that guides you.
  4. Study Romans 12:1–2. Journal what "being transformed by the renewal of your mind" looks like practically for you.
  5. Read Matthew 5–7 (the Sermon on the Mount) and write which teaching challenges you most and why.
  6. Choose one verse you want to memorize this month. Write it daily for a week and journal one thought per day.
  7. Read Colossians 3:12–17 and journal which virtue you most need to "put on" right now.

Creative and Reflective Ideas

  1. Draw a simple map of your spiritual journey — highs, lows, turning points — and write Scripture over each season.
  2. Write a psalm in the style of David — honest, emotional, and ending in praise.
  3. Create a "God sightings" log — record every moment this week where you saw God at work.
  4. Write a letter from the perspective of a Biblical character at a key moment in their story.
  5. Journal through a book of the Bible chapter by chapter, writing one sentence of summary and one sentence of application per chapter.
  6. Write your testimony — how you came to faith — and find the Scriptures that were part of your story.
  7. List every promise God has made in Scripture that applies to you. Find at least 20.
  8. Write what you want your spiritual life to look like in 5 years, then work backward: what disciplines will get you there?

A Note on Getting Started

You don't need to work through this list in order. Scan it, pick the one that speaks to where you are today, and start there. The best Bible journal entry is the one you actually write — not the perfect one you planned but never attempted.

Whether you're in a season of grief or gratitude, doubt or deep faith, there is a passage of Scripture that meets you there. Your journal is where you record that meeting.
