Journal Through the Psalms: A 30-Day Guide

The Psalms are the Bible's journal. They are 150 songs and poems written by real people — shepherds, warriors, kings, exiles — recording their most honest conversations with God. Reading them in sequence is powerful. But journaling through them? That's transformative.

This 30-day guide gives you a Psalm reading, a reflection question, and a journaling prompt for each day. Work through it at your own pace. Come back to entries that hit hard. Let the Psalms become your vocabulary for talking to God.

How to Use This Guide

  • Read the assigned Psalm slowly — twice if possible.
  • Write the verse that stood out most.
  • Answer the reflection question.
  • Write a prayer in your own words based on what you read.
  • Spend 2 minutes in silence before moving on.

Week 1: Foundations (Days 1–7)

Day 1 — Psalm 1
The two paths. What does "meditating on God's law day and night" look like practically for you?

Day 2 — Psalm 8
The majesty of God and the dignity of humanity. When you consider the vastness of creation, what does it mean to you that God is mindful of you?

Day 3 — Psalm 19
Creation and Scripture both reveal God. What aspect of God has creation been revealing to you lately?

Day 4 — Psalm 23
The Lord as shepherd. Which phrase from this Psalm speaks most to your current season? Why?

Day 5 — Psalm 27
Confidence in God's presence. What are you afraid of right now? How does verse 1 speak into it?

Day 6 — Psalm 46
God is our refuge. Where do you run for refuge that isn't God? What would it look like to run to Him first?

Day 7 — Psalm 91
Protection and trust. What promises in this Psalm are hardest for you to believe right now?

Week 2: Honest Prayer (Days 8–14)

Day 8 — Psalm 13
The "How long, O Lord?" prayer. Write your own "How long?" prayer to God about something you're waiting for.

Day 9 — Psalm 22
Forsakenness and faith. Have you ever felt abandoned by God? What happened, and how did He eventually show up?

Day 10 — Psalm 31
Trusting God in crisis. Write verse 14–15 in your own words as a declaration of trust in a current situation.

Day 11 — Psalm 42–43
The soul in depression. Have you ever told your soul to "hope in God" when you didn't feel it? Write about that experience.

Day 12 — Psalm 51
David's prayer of confession. Write your own Psalm 51 — a personal prayer of confession and renewal.

Day 13 — Psalm 62
Waiting silently for God. What does it mean to "wait in silence for God alone"? How does that differ from passive waiting?

Day 14 — Psalm 88
The darkest Psalm — no resolution. Why do you think God included a psalm that doesn't end in praise? What does that tell you about how He receives our pain?

Week 3: Praise and Gratitude (Days 15–21)

Day 15 — Psalm 100
Enter with thanksgiving. Write 10 specific things you're grateful for right now. Then write a prayer of thanks.

Day 16 — Psalm 103
The goodness of God remembered. List the benefits David names in verses 1–5. Which one do you most need to remember today?

Day 17 — Psalm 107
Four different rescue stories. Which of the four "wanderers" in this psalm most resembles your own story?

Day 18 — Psalm 116
Gratitude for answered prayer. Write about a time God answered a prayer that felt impossible. Thank Him in writing.

Day 19 — Psalm 118
Celebration of God's enduring love. Verse 24 says "this is the day the Lord has made." Write specifically what you can rejoice in about today.

Day 20 — Psalm 136
The refrain "his love endures forever." Write your own version of this psalm, alternating personal history with the refrain "his love endures forever."

Day 21 — Psalm 150
Pure praise — no petition, no lament. Write a Psalm 150 of your own: praise God for 10 specific things, using the format "Praise him for ___."

Week 4: Trust and Surrender (Days 22–30)

Day 22 — Psalm 37
Don't fret — trust and delight. What are you fretting about? Write verse 4 as a prayer and ask God to align your desires with His.

Day 23 — Psalm 55
Betrayal and trust in God. Have you ever been betrayed by someone close? Write about it honestly, then read verses 22–23 as a response.

Day 24 — Psalm 63
Thirsting for God. When do you most feel spiritual thirst? What does it feel like? What satisfies it?

Day 25 — Psalm 84
Longing for God's presence. What does it mean to you that "better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere"? Do you believe that? Write honestly.

Day 26 — Psalm 90
Moses on the brevity of life. How does the shortness of life change what you want to do with the time you have?

Day 27 — Psalm 119:1–40
The love of God's Word. Write verse 11 in your own words. What would it look like to "store up God's Word in your heart" this month?

Day 28 — Psalm 130
Waiting for the Lord from the depths. Write about a "depth" you've been in or are in now. Then write verse 7 as a declaration of hope.

Day 29 — Psalm 139
Fully known and fully loved. Which part of God's all-knowing character comforts you? Which part challenges you? Why?

Day 30 — Psalm 145
A psalm of praise from first to last. Write your own tribute to God's character — list 10 things you love about who He is, each with a verse or personal story.

After the 30 Days

Look back through your entries. Where did you grow? Where do you still struggle? Which Psalms do you want to return to? The Psalms are meant to be read in seasons — what speaks to you in grief is different from what speaks in joy. Return to this guide when you need it.

The Psalms have sustained believers for 3,000 years. They'll sustain you too.
