The Theology of Vocation: Called to Purpose
Explore how God calls us to meaningful work and purpose. Discover that vocation is more than a job—it's a divine calling to serve God and others through our daily labor.
About this plan
🙏 What does it mean to be called by God? Many of us understand vocation simply as the job we do or the career we pursue. But the biblical concept of vocation runs far deeper. It speaks to the profound truth that every believer has been called by God to a purpose—whether in the workplace, the home, the church, or the community.
The word vocation comes from the Latin vocare, meaning "to call." Throughout Scripture, we see God calling ordinary people to extraordinary purposes: Abraham to build a nation, Moses to lead God's people, Jeremiah to speak God's word, and the disciples to fish for people. But God's calling isn't reserved for biblical heroes alone. He calls each of us to meaningful work that reflects His character and advances His kingdom.
In our modern world, we often compartmentalize our lives—separating our "spiritual" activities from our "regular" work. But biblical theology teaches us that all legitimate work is sacred when done unto the Lord. Whether you're a teacher, a parent, a nurse, a carpenter, a business owner, or a student, your work matters to God. It's an expression of your vocation.
This seven-day study will help you understand that vocation is not primarily about finding the perfect job, but about recognizing that God has already called you. We'll explore what Scripture says about work, calling, purpose, and how to align your daily labor with God's design. By the end of this journey, you'll see your work—whatever it is—as a sacred opportunity to serve God and love your neighbor.
