Today, let’s look at Joshua. The first book of the “Historical Books” in the Old Testament. Did you know that Joshua has 24 distinct chapters? The Book of Joshua is the first of the Historical books in the Old Testament which is 929 chapters in total. That’s a lot of reading!
Let’s take a closer look at Joshua, a divine record of the conquest of Canaan, and the following division of the Land among the twelve tribes of Israel. Did you know that Joshua was the captain of Israel’s army and a personal servant to Moses? When Moses died, he chose Joshua to lead His people into the Promised Land. As God’s servant, Joshua was strong and very courageous.

In chapter 2 of Joshua, you will read and write about how two spies were sent ahead to the Canaanite fortress of Jericho. Miraculously, the River Jordan was parted as described in chapter 3 – making way for the Israelites to cross over. Once established on the West bank, Joshua’s Army encamped at Gilgal – which served as a temporary headquarters. In chapter 5, you’ll read about how the Passover was kept and the people prepared for battle!
In chapters 6 through 11 of this online bible study group, you’ll read about how Jericho was overthrown by Divine powers and quickly followed by the conquest of Ai, cities in the South and cities in the North. After 7 years, the occupation of this land was completed and the 12 tribes were granted their portions. The Priests and Levites were also given 48 cities throughout the country.
