A short 3-day plan to help children trust God when they feel scared—whether it’s the dark, school, or something new—through comforting Bible truths.

BlogFaith & Spirituality When I Feel Afraid – Helping Kids Overcome Fear with God’s Promises

📖 Intro (Parents or Faith Read to Children)

Hey there! Before we begin today’s Bible time together, take a deep breath and get comfy. This study is all about something we all feel sometimes—fear.

It’s okay to feel afraid. Even grown-ups do! But did you know that the Bible talks a lot about fear—and even more about how much God loves you and wants to help you when you're scared?

Over the next 3 days, we’re going to learn:

  • What God says when we feel afraid,
  • How He promises to stay with us,
  • And how we can talk to Him when we need help.

You don’t need to hide your fears.
You don’t need to fix everything.
You just need to come close to God—and He will help your heart feel strong and safe.

So whether you’re scared of the dark, storms, school, or something else… let’s listen to God’s Word together and find peace that only He can give.

Are you ready? Let’s begin Day 1.

📅 Day 1: God Is Bigger Than My Fears

📖 Scripture Reading

Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

💬 Devotional for Kids and Parents to Read Together

Sometimes we feel afraid. Maybe it’s being alone in the dark. Maybe it’s starting a new school or hearing scary news. Fear can make our hearts beat fast and our stomach feel tight. But guess what? God sees us and loves us when we’re scared.

In Isaiah 41:10, God tells us not to be afraid—not because scary things don’t exist, but because He is with us. That means you’re never alone in the dark. Never alone at school. Never alone in your thoughts. God is right there, ready to hold your hand and help you through it.

When fear knocks at your heart, you can say:
“God is with me, and I don’t have to be afraid.”
And when you say that out loud, fear gets smaller and God feels bigger.

❓ Discussion Questions

  • What is something that makes you feel scared right now?
  • Have you ever talked to God when you were afraid? What happened?
  • What do you think it means that God is “upholding” you with His hand?

📝 Simple Activity

Draw a picture of something that used to make you afraid—but then draw God standing right beside you. Talk about what changes when He’s there.

🙏 Prayer Together

Dear God,
Sometimes I feel afraid. I don’t always know why, and it can feel really big inside me. But You said I don’t have to fear because You are with me. Thank You for always being close when I need help. When I feel scared, help me remember that You are stronger than anything. I trust You to hold my hand and keep me safe.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

📅 Day 2: God Hears Me When I’m Scared

📖 Scripture Reading

Psalm 56:3 (NIV)
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.”

💬 Devotional for Kids and Parents to Read Together

Fear can make you feel like you’re all alone—even when you’re in a room full of people. Sometimes you don’t even know how to explain what’s scaring you. But guess what? You don’t have to have the perfect words. God already knows what’s in your heart, and He hears you the moment you call to Him.

In Psalm 56:3, David says that when he’s afraid, he puts his trust in God. That means even if we still feel scared, we can choose to remember that God is bigger than fear and He is listening closely.

You don’t have to be brave first before talking to God. You just have to talk. He’s not too busy. He’s not too far. He’s ready to listen—right now.

❓ Discussion Questions

  • Have you ever whispered a prayer when you were afraid?
  • What do you think it means to “put your trust” in God?
  • Can you think of something you want to tell God about today?

📝 Simple Activity

Take a piece of paper and draw a “God hears me” prayer box. Inside it, write or draw one thing that’s been making you feel afraid. Then fold it up and place it in a special jar, Bible, or envelope. Pray together and give it to God.

🙏 Prayer Together

Dear God,
Thank You for always hearing me—even when I feel small or scared. You never ignore me, and You never say my fears are silly. Help me remember that I can talk to You anytime, about anything. I trust You to listen and help my heart feel calm. Thank You for being close and kind.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

📅 Day 3: God Stays With Me in the Dark

📖 Scripture Reading

Psalm 23:4 (NIV)
“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”

💬 Devotional for Kids and Parents to Read Together

The dark can feel scary, can’t it? Whether it’s your bedroom at night, a strange noise, or something new and unknown—sometimes the dark feels like the scariest place of all.

But God wants you to know something powerful: He stays with you, even in the dark.
In Psalm 23, David says that even when he walks through the darkest valley (that means the hardest, scariest times), he doesn’t have to be afraid—because God is right there.

When it’s dark in your room at night, God is there.
When something changes and it feels confusing, God is there.
When you’re not sure what’s ahead, God already knows—and He is walking beside you.

He doesn’t wait for the light to show up. He comes into the dark with you, bringing His love, comfort, and peace. And that’s how you know you’re safe—not because the dark disappears, but because He doesn’t leave.

❓ Discussion Questions

  • What do you think it means that God stays with you in the dark?
  • Can you think of a time you felt God close when you were scared?
  • How could you remind yourself that God is near the next time you feel afraid?

📝 Simple Activity

Turn off the lights in the room and sit quietly for 30 seconds. Then light a small candle or turn on a flashlight. Talk together about how even a tiny light can help you feel safe—and how God is even better than that light because He never leaves.

🙏 Prayer Together

Dear God,
Thank You for never leaving me—not even in the dark. When I feel scared, I know You are right beside me. You are stronger than anything I’m afraid of, and You are my light even when things feel confusing or hard. Help me remember that I am never alone, because You are always close. I trust You. I love You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
