The Church and LGBTQ+ Questions: A Biblical Foundation for Compassion and Truth
A seven-day study exploring Scripture's teachings on sexuality, identity, and how the church can respond with both biblical conviction and Christ-like love to LGBTQ+ questions.
About this plan
The intersection of faith and LGBTQ+ questions represents one of the most challenging conversations in the contemporary church. Many believers feel caught between competing values: the desire to affirm the dignity of all people and the commitment to biblical authority. This study does not shy away from this tension. Instead, it invites you to ground yourself in Scripture, to understand both what the Bible says and how Jesus modeled compassionate engagement with those society marginalized.
Our approach is threefold: First, we will examine what Scripture teaches about sexuality and gender, allowing the text to speak for itself without filtering or minimizing its message. Second, we will study how Jesus engaged with controversial issues and people deemed "sinners" by religious authorities, discovering His pattern of radical grace without compromising truth. Third, we will explore how the church can embody both conviction and compassion—defending biblical teaching while treating LGBTQ+ individuals with the profound respect due to image-bearers of God.
This study assumes that biblical authority matters, that all people deserve dignity, and that these two commitments are not mutually exclusive. We will not pretend the Bible is silent on sexuality, nor will we suggest that disagreement with LGBTQ+ affirming theology means hatred toward LGBTQ+ people. Instead, we will seek wisdom for how followers of Jesus can navigate these waters with integrity, humility, and love.
As you work through this week, pray for an open heart—open to what Scripture truly says, open to understanding perspectives different from your own, and open to the Holy Spirit's guidance in how you engage with real people in your life.
