The Theology of Vocation: Discovering God's Call on Your Life

About this plan

What does it mean to have a calling? Many of us drift through life, viewing work as merely a paycheck or a necessary obligation. But the Bible presents a radically different perspective: vocation is a sacred trust from God.

The word "vocation" comes from the Latin vocatio, meaning "a calling." In Christian theology, this refers to God's invitation for us to serve Him through our work, talents, and daily responsibilities. Whether you're a teacher, a parent, a business owner, or a caregiver, your work matters to God. He doesn't separate the "sacred" from the "secular"—all honest labor performed unto the Lord becomes worship.

Throughout Scripture, we see examples of ordinary people called to extraordinary purposes. Moses tended sheep. David was a shepherd. Peter was a fisherman. Yet God used their vocations as platforms for His kingdom work. The Reformation brought renewed emphasis on vocation, teaching that all legitimate work—not just ministry—reflects God's image and serves His design for creation.

Over the next seven days, we'll explore the theological foundations of vocation. We'll examine how God calls us, why work matters, how to discern our calling, and how to live out our vocation with excellence and purpose. You'll discover that your work is not separate from your faith—it's an expression of it.

This study will challenge you to see your daily responsibilities through God's eyes and to recognize that whether you're in an office, a home, a classroom, or a workplace, you're serving the King of Kings. 💼 🙏 ✨
