What Are Spiritual Gifts?
Spiritual gifts are supernatural abilities given by the Holy Spirit to every believer for the building up of the church and the advancement of God's Kingdom. They are not natural talents, though they may work through your natural abilities. They are not achievements to earn — they are gifts freely given the moment you trust in Christ.
Three primary passages define spiritual gifts in the New Testament: Romans 12:6–8, 1 Corinthians 12:4–11, and Ephesians 4:11–12. Together they list between 17 and 20 distinct gifts, depending on how you count them.

- Prophecy — Speaking God's truth to build up, encourage, and comfort
- Shepherding/Pastoring — Nurturing and protecting a community of believers
- Teaching — Explaining Scripture clearly so others can understand and apply it
- Tongues / Interpretation — Speaking in and interpreting unlearned languages for edification
- Wisdom — Applying spiritual knowledge to specific situations with God-given insight
How to Discover Your Spiritual Gifts
Three pathways work together to reveal your spiritual gifts:

- Find your context — where in your church, neighborhood, or network can these gifts serve others?
- Step into it — tell your pastor or ministry leader you want to serve in this area. The church desperately needs people who know what they're built for.
Common Questions About Spiritual Gifts
Can I have more than one gift? Yes. Most believers have a cluster of gifts, with one or two being dominant. The Spirit distributes gifts "just as he determines" (1 Cor. 12:11).
Can my gifts change over time? Your core gifts tend to remain consistent, but their expression can deepen and mature over a lifetime of walking with God.
What if I don't feel gifted at anything? You are — 1 Corinthians 12:7 says "to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given." Sometimes undiscovered gifts just need the right context to emerge.
