What Are Spiritual Gifts?

Spiritual gifts are supernatural abilities given by the Holy Spirit to every believer for the building up of the church and the advancement of God's Kingdom. They are not natural talents, though they may work through your natural abilities. They are not achievements to earn — they are gifts freely given the moment you trust in Christ.

Three primary passages define spiritual gifts in the New Testament: Romans 12:6–8, 1 Corinthians 12:4–11, and Ephesians 4:11–12. Together they list between 17 and 20 distinct gifts, depending on how you count them.

The Spiritual Gifts Listed in Scripture

The major spiritual gifts include:

  • Administration — Organizing and leading projects for God's purposes
  • Apostleship — Pioneering new ministries and churches across cultural lines
  • Discernment — Distinguishing between truth and deception, the Spirit and other spirits
  • Encouragement (Exhortation) — Motivating others toward faith and spiritual growth
  • Evangelism — Communicating the gospel with unusual clarity and effectiveness
  • Faith — Trusting God for things others deem impossible
  • Giving — Contributing generously and sacrificially with great joy
  • Healing — Being used by God to restore physical, emotional, or spiritual wholeness
  • Helps/Service — Meeting practical needs and supporting others in ministry
  • Knowledge — Understanding and communicating biblical truths with unusual insight
  • Leadership — Casting vision and guiding God's people forward
  • Mercy — Showing compassion and care to those who suffer
  • Miracles — Being used by God in supernatural demonstrations of His power
  • Prophecy — Speaking God's truth to build up, encourage, and comfort
  • Shepherding/Pastoring — Nurturing and protecting a community of believers
  • Teaching — Explaining Scripture clearly so others can understand and apply it
  • Tongues / Interpretation — Speaking in and interpreting unlearned languages for edification
  • Wisdom — Applying spiritual knowledge to specific situations with God-given insight

How to Discover Your Spiritual Gifts

Three pathways work together to reveal your spiritual gifts:

1. Assessment. A structured spiritual gifts assessment helps you identify patterns in your wiring and inclinations. HolyJot's faith assessment provides personalized insight based on your responses, helping you see which gifts may be operating in your life.

2. Experience. Gifts are often discovered by doing. Volunteer in different areas of ministry — teach a Sunday school class, lead a small group, serve at a food pantry, join the prayer team. You'll notice where you feel most alive and effective.

3. Affirmation. Other believers can see your gifts before you can. Ask your pastor, small group leader, or trusted Christian friends what they observe in you. The body of Christ confirms individual gifting.

How to Put Your Gifts to Work

Gifts are not given for self-discovery alone — they're given for deployment. Ephesians 4:12 says gifts are given "to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up." Here are three practical steps to deploy your gifts:

  1. Name your top 2–3 gifts based on your assessment and experience.
  2. Find your context — where in your church, neighborhood, or network can these gifts serve others?
  3. Step into it — tell your pastor or ministry leader you want to serve in this area. The church desperately needs people who know what they're built for.

Common Questions About Spiritual Gifts

Can I have more than one gift? Yes. Most believers have a cluster of gifts, with one or two being dominant. The Spirit distributes gifts "just as he determines" (1 Cor. 12:11).

Can my gifts change over time? Your core gifts tend to remain consistent, but their expression can deepen and mature over a lifetime of walking with God.

What if I don't feel gifted at anything? You are — 1 Corinthians 12:7 says "to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given." Sometimes undiscovered gifts just need the right context to emerge.
